Today is the 1st Day of Christmas. As an early Christmas gift to Alex, her boyfriend, Ethan, and Jamin, we reserved and purchased seats to see The Hobbit tonight, I figured that today should be a Hobbit-themed day. We are HUGE lovers of Tolkien and his writings. We have a room in our home that we call The Shire, with a signed print by the Brothers Hildebrandt (called The Fellowship), a large framed map of Middle Earth, and several other prints upon the walls. Aaron has loved Tolkien since he was a young boy. When I married him, it was inevitable that I became a Tolkien convert. I finally understood why so many of my friends had been so endeared to this author, who was such a great lover of language and folklore. Aaron and I met, when he was having a mutual friend’s grandmother sew him an Aragorn costume for a Christmas work party. He and our mutual friend came to visit me, while they were up this way…..and I am forever thankful they decided to stop in for a visit. One of my most cherished times in our marriage, was when I was pregnant with Jamin. Aaron read The Hobbit aloud to me, for many evenings, as I sat embroidering a quilt for Alex. For Aaron’s birthday this year, I have commissioned his grandma (Ona) to paint a large image….of a hobbit hole. I am so excited to see it, when she is done! In keeping with tradition, the great room in our next house will be called The Shire and all of our Tolkien paraphernalia will adorn the walls.
Here is one of my most favorite poems, which just happens to be by Tolkien:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
What are we doing today to celebrate? I forged these gold rings for the hobbitses to wear. We are listening to Aaron read The Hobbit. We have been listening to several songs off our Lord of the Rings soundtracks. We are having several small meals today and will be having some tea later. The little hobbitses will watch the cartoon version of The Hobbit today, while we are running errands. Finally, later this evening, when all of the little hobbitses are sound asleep, we are taking the older hobbitses out to (thoroughly) enjoy a film that we have all LONG been awaiting…..THE HOBBIT! 🙂
We are Happy Hobbitses! 🙂
